Now, I have changed the Logon screen wallpaper in just about every version of Windows I've used, so I knew that there had to be a way to do so.įor example, in the April 1, 2009, blog article, " Tweak Windows Vista's Logon Screen to Meet Your Needs," I showed you how to perform this operation using a program called LogonStudio from the folks at Stardock. During that time, I began to think about changing the Logon screen wallpaper. While experimenting with several Microsoft Windows 7 systems recently, I spent a lot of time staring at the Logon screen.

After it is done booting you will now be prompted to enter both the username and password, without being provided with a list of available users.Editor's note: This blog post was originally published in February 2010, but it continues to be one of our most popular posts, so I thought you might want to revisit it. Now close all open windows and restart the system.

This will force the user to not only guess the password but the username as well. So how can one protect their system from this type of attack? Aside from using secure passwords you can also go a step further and enable the classic logon screen as used in the earlier versions of Windows.

If the users are not using secure passwords then they will easily be compromised. Anyone attempting to infiltrate your system will have access to all the possible usernames and will merely have to guess the passwords. This has a much nicer look and feel to it than the old login prompts of Windows XP and its predecessors but it at the expense of security. Much like in Windows Vista you’ll find a graphical login screen for Windows 7.
